Preamble
We recognize the power of digital content to inform, influence, and shape public opinion. With this power comes responsibility. This Code aims to guide ethical behavior among independent creators particularly those who cover real people, real events, and high-profile cases in a manner that protects truth, dignity, and the public trust.
1. Accuracy & Truthfulness
Verify before publishing. Seek multiple sources and confirm facts before presenting them as true.
Distinguish fact from opinion. Clearly label commentary, speculation, or satire.
Cite sources transparently. Attribute quotes, documents, and research to their original source.
Avoid sensationalism. Do not distort, exaggerate, or fabricate events for clicks or engagement.
2. Harm Minimization
Respect privacy. Avoid publishing private information (e.g., addresses, phone numbers) of private individuals unless there is a clear public interest.
Protect victims and witnesses. Refrain from harassment, intimidation, or targeted abuse of victims, their families, or civilian witnesses.
Do not glorify perpetrators. Avoid language or imagery that idolizes or excuses harm.
3. Accountability
Acknowledge mistakes. Promptly correct factual errors with transparency.
Enable feedback. Allow audiences to report inaccuracies or concerns about harm.
Take responsibility. Don’t deflect blame to sources, platforms, or algorithms when harm results from your content.
4. Integrity & Independence
Disclose conflicts. Be transparent about personal relationships, sponsorships, or donations that may bias coverage.
Avoid pay-to-play. Do not offer favorable coverage in exchange for money, gifts, or access.
Resist mob pressure. Avoid amplifying rumors or accusations based solely on public outrage.
5. Fairness & Balance
Represent all sides honestly. Especially in legal or controversial matters, strive to present multiple perspectives.
Don’t edit deceptively. Avoid misleading edits or thumbnails that distort reality.
Be cautious with true crime. Respect the legal process and presume innocence unless guilt is established through due process.
6. Platform-Specific Responsibilities
Label sensitive content. Use appropriate content warnings for graphic material or emotional triggers.
Follow platform guidelines. Adhere to community standards, especially concerning hate speech, harassment, or misinformation.
Collaborate when possible. Work with legal, forensic, or journalistic experts when interpreting complex material like court filings or digital evidence.
7. Commitment to the Public Interest
Uplift, don’t exploit. Use your platform to inform and educate, not to incite or mislead.
Support justice, not spectacle. Don’t become a participant in the cases or lives you cover.
Commitment to professional development. Continue learning about media ethics, digital literacy, and best practices in journalism.
Adoption & Display
Creators who adopt this Code may display a “Responsible Creator” badge and agree to periodic reviews or feedback. Adherence is voluntary, but violations should be acknowledged, and corrective action taken.
